who he thought was the new king of the blues. I had never heard of Clark. I did some investigating on Youtube running across his now famous performance of “Bright Lights Big City” and the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago several years ago. I was pretty much hooked, and went out and picked up “Black And Blu” his major label debut album. Clark is not really doing anything new, but what he does he does extremely well.

Comparisons to Hendrix are inevitable, and his cover of “Third Stone From The Sun” is outstanding, but Clark also explores pure rock, soul, and even a little hip hop along with traditional rock oriented blues. I have not heard any of his earlier Indi albums, so the cries of sell out from some of his longer time fans do not really resonate to my ears. Yes, this album is a bit slick in the production and some of the track appear to be obvious nods at an attempt to get airplay, but overall I think this is a strong album of mostly good to great tracks.

There are a few near clunkers that keep me from giving this album a 5 star review, but I can’t imagine fans of traditional blues and especially blues rock not enjoying this talented artist. I hope you take the tyme to familiarize yourself with this entire set. Your favorites might not be my favorites, but I think we all can find some music we really love on this album as well as appreciate the fact that Gary Clark Jr. is a very special musical talent that will not be labeled!!
